Sunlight polycarbonate sheets possess characteristics of high strength and stiffness, but what about their load-bearing capacity? It requires a comprehensive analysis based on multiple factors, including the connection method of the polycarbonate sheets, the thickness of the sheets, and the raw materials used, among others. In practical applications, the commonly used connection methods for polycarbonate sheets mainly include three types: flat connection with pressure strips, U-shaped clips, and side embedding. Comparatively, the strength of polycarbonate sheets with flat connection using pressure strips and side embedding is somewhat weaker, while U-shaped clips perform better.
Thickness is also one of the main factors determining the load-bearing capacity of polycarbonate sheets. Generally, the thicker the polycarbonate sheet, the greater its relative load-bearing capacity. The materials used to make polycarbonate sheets can be categorized into virgin materials and recycled materials, which results in varying load-bearing capacities of the finished sheets. Polycarbonate sheets produced using recycled materials are prone to cracking, indicating lower load-bearing capacity, whereas virgin materials rarely encounter such issues, demonstrating better load-bearing capacity.
Characteristics of Polycarbonate Sheet Products:
(1) Light Transmittance: PC polycarbonate sheets can achieve a light transmittance of up to about 89%, comparable to glass. UV-coated sheets are less prone to yellowing, fogging, or reduced transparency when exposed to sunlight. After ten years, the loss of light transmittance is approximately 10%, while PVC experiences a loss rate of 15–20%, and fiberglass about 12–20%.
(2) Impact Resistance: The impact strength is about 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass. It is renowned as "unbreakable glass" and "sounding steel."
(3) UV Protection: One side of the PC sheet is co-extruded with an anti-UV coating, while the other side features anti-condensation treatment, combining UV resistance, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It blocks ultraviolet rays from passing through, making it suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Light Weight: Its density is about half that of glass, reducing costs related to transportation, handling, installation, and supporting frameworks.
(5) Flame Retardancy: According to the GB50222—95 standard, PC polycarbonate sheets are classified as flame-retardant, specifically B1 grade. The self-ignition point of PC sheets is about 580°C, and they self-extinguish after being removed from a flame. When burning, they do not produce toxic gases and do not contribute to the spread of fire.
(6) Bendability: They can be cold-bent on-site according to design drawings to form arches, semi-circular roofs, and windows. The bending radius is approximately 175 times the thickness of the sheet, and they can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound Insulation: PC polycarbonate sheets offer significant sound insulation effects, providing better acoustic insulation than glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under the same thickness conditions, the sound insulation of PC polycarbonate sheets is about 5–9 dB higher than that of glass. They are the material of choice for sound barriers on highways.
(8) Energy Efficiency: They keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. PC polycarbonate sheets have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics, with thermal insulation effects about 7–25% higher than glass of the same thickness. The thermal insulation of PC polycarbonate sheets can reach up to about 49%, significantly reducing heat loss, making them suitable for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature Adaptability: PC sheets do not become brittle at -40°C and do not deform at 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties remain largely unchanged even in harsh environments.
(10) Weather Resistance: PC polycarbonate sheets can maintain the stability of various physical indicators within a temperature range of approximately -40°C to 120°C. After 4,000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing degree is 2, and the reduction in light transmittance is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-Condensation: When the outdoor temperature is 0°C and the indoor temperature is 23°C, with indoor relative humidity below about 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface of the sheet without dripping.
